Prime Time Showcase: A guide to Vebro Polymers’ primer suitability for various substrates

Not all primers are made equal. Vebro Polymers’ range of primers and DPMs has been designed to suit a number of different installation scenarios and to meet a wide variety of service requirements, meaning whatever the project, we’re likely to have a primer to suit!

While all of our epoxy and PU primers can be installed below epoxy and PU coating systems, not all of them are suitable as a DPM, and the substrates on which they can be installed differs.

Let’s set the stage and introduce each of our prime suspects, including the key service requirements they’re designed to meet…

vebro EP Primer

✅ Suitable for below epoxy & PU

✅ Suitable for dry concrete and steel

The workhorse of our primer range, vebro EP Primer is a solvent free, colourless 2-component, moisture mitigating primer offering excellent adhesive and cohesive bond strength properties for overcoating with suitable epoxy, polyurethane or polyurea resin products.

While the 0.2 mm epoxy primer and is designed to seal concrete porosity prior to the application of resin flooring systems, it can also be applied to steel.

vebro EP Primer LTC

✅ Suitable for below epoxy & PU

✅ Suitable for dry concrete and steel

A low temperature cure alternative to vebro EP Primer, the LTC allows for applications in temperatures as low as 5°C. This comes in particularly handy in warehouses and industrial units during the colder months, meaning work on-site can continue despite the winter weather.

vebro EP Primer RC

✅ Suitable for below epoxy & PU

✅ Suitable for dry concrete and steel

Designed for use with car park deck coating systems, vebro EP Primer RC mitigates moisture from cementitious substrates, but can also be used over steel substrates.

The two-component, clear primer, typically broadcast with vebro Natural Quartz while wet, delivers excellent bond strength when overcoated with suitable epoxy, polyurethane or polyurea coating systems.

vebro EP DPM (clear or pigmented)

✅ Suitable for below epoxy & PU

✅ Suitable for dry concrete, on-grade concrete (2 coats) and steel

vebro EP DPM is a solvent free, two-component, moisture mitigating and water vapour suppressing liquid damp proof membrane.

The DPM, which comes in a clear option, as well as brick red or grey, offers outstanding substrate penetrative properties, and its formulated cured film flexibilisation allows for substrate thermal expansion accommodation, along with excellent adhesive and cohesive bond strength properties, enabling early application with suitable resin coatings.

To form a surface damp proof membrane and moisture vapour suppressant to concrete or screed substrates, vebro EP DPM is ideal for fast-track building programmes associated with the risk of residual rising moisture as trapped water within the underlying substrate.

vebro EP DPM Plus

✅ Suitable for below epoxy & PU

✅ Suitable for dry concrete, on-grade concrete (2 coats) and steel

vebro EP DPM Plus is designed for use on cementitious substrates with a moisture content of up to 6% (or 100% RH), as well as steel substrates. The material is delivered pre-filled in the correct ratioed quantities and ready to use. In addition, vebro EP DPM Plus may also be used as an adhesive base coat for cement or composite semi-dry screeds.

vebro EP DPM Plus is suitable for use with underfloor heating, provided the surface temperature does not exceed 27°C in accordance with BS 8203 and BS 5325.

vebro EP Universal Primer

✅ Suitable for below epoxy & PU

✅ Suitable for dry concrete, on-grade concrete (2 coats) and green concrete

vebro EP Universal Primer is a two-component, pre-filled epoxy primer that can be used as a moisture barrier for industrial floors — including over substrates with a high moisture content — or a primer for epoxy or polyurethane coating systems. Being a filled primer, it can help bridge blow holes in the concrete, helping to deliver a smooth final finish.

vebro EP OT Primer

✅ Suitable for below epoxy & PU

✅ Suitable for dry concrete and oil-stained concrete

vebro EP OT Primer is an epoxy resin surface primer that is tolerant of residual oil contamination in concrete and cementitious floors.

This slick solution is designed to improve the adhesion of subsequent epoxy and polyurethane coatings and cementitious screed systems to substrates that have previously been contaminated with oils have been thoroughly cleaned but may still retain some traces of residual contamination.

vebro EP WB Primer

✅ Suitable for below epoxy & PU

✅ Suitable for dry concrete, steel and stainless steel

vebro EP WB Primer is a water-based, solvent-free, low emission, two-component primer based on high-grade epoxy resin.

vebro EP WB Primer, which goes on white and dries clear, can be applied over dry concrete, steel and stainless steel and is used as primer for vapour-permeable coatings.

vebro PU SC

✅ Suitable for below epoxy (when fully scattered) & PU

✅ Suitable for dry concrete, on-grade concrete and asphalt

vebro PU SC is a three-component, solvent-free primer and binding agent that is designed for use in vebrodeck car park deck coating systems

The polyurethane-based primer can be scattered with aggregate while still wet to produce an anti-skid surface and is also suitable for use as a primer or scratchcoat on concrete, asphalt and steel.

vebro PU SC DPM

✅ Suitable for below epoxy (when fully scattered) & PU

✅ Suitable for dry concrete and on-grade concrete

vebro PU SC DPM is an unpigmented scratch coat and primer exhibiting moisture mitigating tolerance up to 100% Relative Humidity (6% CM) in the underlying cementitious substrate.

The polyurethane product can be used as a scratch, damp tolerant primer or levelling layer on mechanically prepared concrete substrates prior to coating with resin systems, as well as be used as a primer or scratch-coat on steel substrates.

So there you have it!

With this overview of Vebro Polymers’ range of epoxy and PU primers, you can ensure that prepped substrates are primed to perfection, helping to create a lasting floor coating solution that stands the test of time.
